Our Recordings

In our first decade as an ensemble we have released five critically-acclaimed and award-winning CDs. Each of them was a labour of love, bringing forgotten masterpieces from the shelves of archives around Europe and back into the public sphere where they belong. Our recordings feature world premieres of music that we love and are sure you will agree with us—performed by, the words of BR Klassik, 'a star-studded ensemble'.

Johann Christoph Pepusch, Chandos Anthems

BBC Music Magazine Choruses, arias and duets abound and the soloists, the Girl Choristers of Canterbury Cathedral and the instrumentalists breathe vitality into the music… there is a single movement oboe concerto, eloquently played by Mark Baigent. Robert Rawson, to whom we owe a debt of gratitude for his rehabilitation of an unjustly overlooked composer, directs with both style and affection.

Gramophone Ciara Hendrick and Alex Potter’s graceful interweaving in the duet ‘Praise the Lord with harp’ has counterparts in the lyrical concertante playing of violinist Tassilo Erhardt and oboist Mark Baigent. Another duet, ‘For faithful is the word of God’, is navigated mellifluously by Nicholas Mulroy and Nicholas Todd.

Gottfried Finger, Music for European Courts and Concerts

Gramophone The performances are enthusiastic and assured, with the wind players distinguishing themselves especially

Diapason "Saluons aussi une équipe remarquablement homogène et des solistes épatants dont le hautbois de Mark Baigent et l’habile violon de Tassilo Erhardt." 5/5

Limelight "... this is music that fairly leaps off the page for its spirit, ingenuity and sheer likability." CD of the Month, 5/5

Pepusch, Venus and Adonis

Gramophone: 'Hats off to The Harmonious Society of Tickle-Fiddle Gentlemen for this... this excellent recording. Philippa Hyde, whose florid passages sparkle articulately [and] Ciara Hendrick... an impeccable juxtaposition of imperious authority and pathos.’

The Observer: ' immediately engaging and gloriously tuneful piece… taxing the soloists to the limit with some virtuoso coloratura […] recreated here by the fleet-footed Harmonious Society of Tickle-Fiddle Gentlemen.’

BR Klassik (CD of the week), Germany
‘Outstanding soloists... and a star-studded ensemble...A premiere recording of reference character.’

Josef Guretzky, Concertos

The Strad: “...These are lithe, athletic performances ... The euphoniously named Harmonious Society of Tickle-Fiddle Gentleman ... play one-to-a-part and clearly have fun in this fairly closely recorded disc.”

Gramophone: “...This music certainly brings out good things in the Tickle-Fiddlers, who fully justify their name. There is real joy in the music-making. “

BBC Music Magazine: “These performances of his [Guretzky] concertos are every bit as frisky and fun as the music itself.”

Forbes: 'With improvised cadenzas and first-rate historically informed performances from the Harmonious Society of Tickle-Fiddle Gentlemen, the spontaneity and quality of this release make it a rare gem and hot candidate for the Best Classical Recordings of 2017." No. 5 in s top ten classical recordings of 2017

‘These first recordings are editorially, and in terms of recorded sound as well as in interpretation on such a high level that one wonders why so far no one wanted to know something about Pepusch’.
